Wesleyan School is pleased to announce that senior Andy Yang has been chosen as a Jefferson Scholarship recipient at the University of Virginia. The program covers the full cost of attendance for four years of undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, including a stipend for housing, books, and supplies, as well as unique enrichment program, including foreign travel, networking, and mentoring programs, to support his experience. The total value of the scholarship and stipend exceeds $340,000.
Andy, son of Allen and Meilin Yang, is president of the Wesleyan Honor Council, captain of Wesleyan’s math and science bowl teams, and a four-year member of the cross-country and soccer teams. Outside of Wesleyan, Andy was named to the American Math Competition’s Distinguished Honor Roll, and he helped lead his Georgia chapter of the American Regions Mathematics League to a Division B victory in 2019.
Awarded solely on the basis of merit, Jefferson Scholarships are granted to candidates who have been nominated by their schools and undergone a rigorous selection process, including multiple interviews and skills assessments. Nominations for the Scholarship pour in from all corners of the country and globe, and 40 Jefferson Scholarships are typically awarded each year.
“Not only is Andy incredibly gifted in the classroom and a member of multiple honor societies, but he also contributes to the Wesleyan community in countless ways – all while being uniquely kind and humble in his interaction with his peers,” said Ken Connor, Director of College Advising at Wesleyan School. “We are grateful to have supported him in this endeavor and are proud of his accomplishment as a Jefferson Scholar.”
