Unplugged at the Park – Audra’s review

I’m certainly going to need to mention that I’m very biased about my first experience at Unplugged at the Park.   I’m a HUGE fan of Third Day and their lead singer (Mac Powell) was the featured act at last night’s concert at Piedmont park.   He and a few friends have ventured from their “day jobs” and created a country album entitled Mac Powell Country.   I was lucky enough to be front row center last night while they played a few tracks from the Country album and it was an absolute blast!

My husband and I along with another couple met at Piedmont park last night for the show.  The show started at 7:00 but we were mostly interested in the final act so we meandered in about 8 PM.   It was a beautiful night in the park and I absolutely love the view of Atlanta’s Midtown skyline from Park Tavern.   The cost of Unplugged at the Park is FREE but you have to show your ID and be 21 and over to enter without a parent.   My parents were NOT there and believe it or not they asked this old girl for her ID!   There were several kids there though so don’t let this stop you from taking your kids!

Even my husband, who is not quite as enamored with Third Day as I am, kept saying how fantastic the venue is for a concert.   It’s an indoor/outdoor area covered by a large semi-permanent tent.  The stage and tables near the stage are completely covered in case of rain (which we all know is frequent these days!)  However, there is an outdoor uncovered area around the side and behind the stage.   The wait staff will take your food and beverage orders throughout the concert.  You can sit at your table and enjoy the show or if you feel so inclined you can get up and dance in front of the stage!

There is also plenty of space just outside in the public area of Piedmont park where people had chairs and blankets set up and were throwing balls with their dogs and enjoying the view of the skyline.   These folks couldn’t see the concert but they could definitely hear the music and enjoy the wonderful park atmosphere while having a picnic brought from home!

The friends that went to the concert with us happen to live near Mac Powell and his family in Cobb County and they have daughters at the same school.   So….thanks to my dear friend Jen I was able to actually meet Mac Powell and get my picture taken with him!    I’m here to tell you that this was definitely an all time concert highlight for me!  My children wanted to know what I said to him and if I asked him if he looks like Jesus on purpose!   I was a little star struck but chose not to ask him about his appearance but instead said very sincerely that I wanted him to know that I truly believe that God has blessed him with the most beautiful voice of all.   He smiled and seemed touched but I really do believe that I feel closest to God when I’m plugged into my iPod listening to Mac’s raspy soulful voice singing Third Day praise songs!
