When will Europe open to Americans has been my most asked question this year! Runner up is the follow-up question as to whether it will open to only vaccinated people. These two questions look to be on the brink of finally getting answered!!
The President of the EU Commission announced Sunday that fully vaccinated Americans will be able to travel to the EU by this summer. There are still many details to be ironed out, which look to be announced in early May. No firm date has been set for when Americans will be allowed to enter or if that date will vary by country. There is also the question of will they let in un-vaccinated travelers with a negative COVID test (which is what Greece is doing). Americans will also likely continue to be required to present a negative COVID test before re-entering the U.S. regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not. As widely reported, and despite opposition, it appears a vaccine passport is likely to be used in order to make travel possible.
This announcement is coming off France’s statement last week that they will ease international travel restrictions for the summer (including Americans). Greece lifted restrictions last week ahead of their May 14 announcement date, which also applies to Americans. Another interesting development was Delta adding a non-stop flight option between Atlanta and Athens, Greece beginning July 2. This is a huge win for Atlanta-based travelers, as this route has not been offered since 2011! The JFK to Athens route will also restart May 28.
Please remember to travel responsibly, wear your mask and do not travel unnecessarily if you are elderly or immune-compromised! And remember to check your destination’s travel restrictions/requirements before and during planning, as well as double-checking before departure!
