Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is centered around the remembrance of lost loved ones, as communities come together to celebrate their memory. In honor of that, the City of Roswell, in partnership with Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces, is hosting the second annual Día de los Muertos festival Saturday, October 30th from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will be an afternoon and evening filled with fun and community spirit for all ages
The fun will also coincide with the spirit of the celebration. Come in your best Day of the Dead costume and get your face painted since no Día de los Muertos celebration would be complete without a traditional candy skull face painting. At 5 p.m., there will be a Catrina and Catrin contest to determine the best costume. The awarded winner will receive cash prizes. There will also be traditional entertainment in the form of street performers, Aztec dancers, and a mariachi band. The on-site vendors will sell Mexican cuisine, such as tamales and empanadas. To conclude the festivities, a movie inspired by the Mexican holiday, “Coco,” will be showing starting at 6 p.m.
For those wanting to participate in the more serious side of Día de los Muertos, there will be an authentic Ofrenda, an altar honoring friends and family that have passed. Bring a copy of a photo or a small memento of a loved one to place at the altar.
This is an all-age event, however, for those 21+, there will be a tequila-tasting experience available. Showcasing the unique flavors of Mexico, this experience includes tasting tokens, a souvenir cup, and access to a mixologist that specializes in tequila cocktails. A professional chef will be curating tequila-inspired meal tastings as well. All this is priced at $35 per person.
This festival is free to the public, with the exception of food vendors and the special ticketed tequila-tasting experience.
