PRESENTATIONS
February 25th: The Inklings: C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien
A sketch of the academic lives of two of the best known writers of fantasy, looking at their careers at Oxford and the relationship between their scholarship and their works of imaginative fiction. A particular focus of the talk will be Lewis’s last work, The Discarded Image, a study of the Christian foundations of medieval literature, and Tolkien’s influential essay “The Monster and the Critics.”
March 4th: Anglo-Saxon Christianity and the Genesis of Tolkien’s Middle Earth
An examination of the relationship between the mythology of Middle Earth and early Anglo-Saxon religious texts, in particular Caedmon’s hymn and the poems Exodus and Dream of the Rood. The talk will focus on how parallels between Tolkien’s tales and these early texts reveals the Christian concepts underlying the Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings.
March 18th: C. S. Lewis: An introduction to his Philosophical Writings.
While well known for his Narnia stories and apologetic writings Lewis also, wrote philosophical works that continue to engage and challenge modern day philosophers. This lecture will examine some of these works; Miracles and The Abolition of Man and highlight ways that Lewis’ philosophical perspective impacts and informs modern day Christian belief.
Dr. Bradford Smith is Professor of History at Oglethorpe University, where he has taught since 1992. He has published two books and numerous articles on Reformation history and is currently working on a book on witch hunts in seventeenth-century Germany. He has taught a range of courses on ancient, medieval, and early modern history, including courses on the history of Christianity.
The Reverend Dr. John F. McCard has served as rector of St. Martin’s since 2004. Prior to his call to St. Martin’s he served in parishes in Florida, Texas and Ohio. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from General Theological Seminary in New York City, his Master of Sacred Theology Degree from Nashotah House in Wisconsin and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia Theological Seminary. He has taught classes on C. S. Lewis’ life and theology, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Screwtape Letters, and the friendship between J.R.R. Tolkien and Lewis.
