The Capital Grille….an impromptu review by Audra

Note from Audra:  This is not a paid advertisement.   I just loved this place so much that I had to share with The Aha! Connection.

On our 17th wedding anniversary in early June, my husband and I were at two separate baseball parks watching our sons play the game we all love.   Now that summer baseball season has ended,  Kirk and I seized the opportunity to have a really nice dinner to celebrate our 17 years together!

It’s a personal goal of mine to dine at all Dunwoody restaurants (well maybe not all)!   We went a little upscale to celebrate this momentous occasion and it was worth every dollar!

From my initial call to make the reservation to the valet that brought us our car,  the staff was friendly, attentive and made us feel special.  Our server (Julie Holbrook) was delightful.   She allowed us to take our time and enjoy dinner, gave great suggestions for food, wine, and dessert, and insisted on taking an anniversary photo for us!   You should definitely ask for Julie if you get the opportunity to dine at Capital Grille!

Kirk and I have an uncanny knack for choosing the exact same item off every menu.   You can give each of us a menu from any restaurant and 95% of the time we will pick the same food.   So, for years we have opted to share everything from appetizers to dessert so we can try so many more things together!

Here’s what we shared last night:

  • WineMontes Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Appetizer:  Pan Fried Calamari with Hot Cherry Peppers
  • Salad:  The Capital Grille Chopped Salad
  • Main Course:  Bone-In Kona Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin with Shallot Butter
  • Side Dish:  Creamed Corn with Smoked Bacon
  • Dessert:  Flourless Chocolate Espresso Cake (for me, the chocoholic)
    Crème brûlée (for Kirk)

Our comments:

The wine was perfect and not too pricey!

The calamari was delicious.  It had the perfect amount of “kick” from the peppers!  When it was delivered to the table I wondered where the dipping sauce was.   I quickly realized it didn’t need sauce.  It was perfect without anything added except a quick squeeze from the lemon wedge on the plate!

The salad was phenomenal!  It contained garbanzo beans, asparagus, croutons, heirloom tomatoes, radishes, romaine and an olive vinaigrette.   I asked Julie if I could come by someday and get a salad “to go” for lunch.  She said “YES”!   She also said you can get it with fresh shrimp added.  YUM!  I’ll be doing that for lunch soon!

The sirloin was delicious!  If I didn’t know better,  I would have licked the shallot butter sauce off of my plate! We always opt for the “bone-in” option at any steak restaurant so that we can bring the bone to George!  He obviously loved it as much as we did because he cleaned that bone in less than 5 minutes flat!

The corn was simply fabulous.   Kirk almost didn’t order dessert because he wanted to eat every last kernel of the corn!   Creamed corn with bacon….of course it was fantastic!

Finally, the dessert….Kirk and I often vary in our dessert choice.   I will always choose the chocolate option and Kirk doesn’t share my affinity for chocolate.   The cake was like brownie batter but just a little firmer.   It was one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth.   I ate every last bite!   The Crème brûlée was perfectly delicious as well!
