I’m the kind of Mom who sporadically checks my boys’ social media and texts just to make sure they don’t need any of my advice on proper behavior. They love this about me…..HA! I’ve had to intervene once or twice with a nice little lesson from Mama. Sometimes I wish we lived in 1950 (well before cell phones). I give the boys ample freedom so I miss some stuff. I have plenty of teaching moments ahead of me, I’m sure, but I can promise you this….I’m trying to keep an eye on it!!!
Recently I ran across a post where over 100 middle-schoolers were responding to one of my 6th graders’ Instagram photos. Almost every single comment was preceded by “TBH”. I guess I’m stupid because apparently this term
has been around for at least SIX MONTHS! I never knew that one of the requirements of being a teen parent was to learn a whole new language…..the language of internet slang! Yuck. I found this great article: TBH (To Be Honest) and More Slang Parents Should Know. After reading it and then going back to re-read the aforementioned post I was pleasantly surprised that all 100 of these comments were extremely pleasant and complimentary. Hooray!…..I’m thankful for this happy discovery and taking this opportunity to study up on my slang…..so I thought I’d share a few of the internet slang acronyms I’ve discovered along the way. We parents must stick together in the technological age so I’m sharing what I know with you! Disclaimer: I have NOT seen MOST of these terms on my children’s devices. I would be dead of a heart attack (and broken heart) by now if I had seen some of them! I just wanted you to see what I found so you can be aware if necessary…..
JBH = Just Being Honest
LBH = Let’s Be Honest or Loser Back Home
TBBH = To Be Brutally Honest
SMEXI = Smart and Sexy
IMO = In My Opinion
GOMB = Get Off My Back
KOTL = Kiss On The Lips
KOS = Kill On Sight. This is a term that originated with online war games such as World of Warcraft. It means basically marked for death just by showing your face. However, it can also be used as a threat by a cyber bully.
S&D = Search and Destroy (also could be a threat)
Ug = Ugly
CID = Acid (as in, the drug)
WAW = What a Waste
CNBU = Can Not Be Unseen
Gomer = Geek, wierdo, nerd
Ratchet = Ugly, nasty, awful
Broken = Hungover from alcohol
Beep face = A general insult
Butter face = A named describing a person with an alleged pretty body but ugly face
420 = This means marijuana (also look for words like 420 4life, boo, blunt, and buddha)
ASLP – Age, Sex, Location, Picture (if someone is asking this to your child, dig deeper)
FYEO = For Your Eyes Only
CD9 = Code 9; parents around
POS = Parents Over Shoulder
FUBAR = ****** Up Beyond All Recognition (inebriated or stoned)
Sugarpic = Suggestive or erotic photo
53x = Sex
