Two folks who have given me several great recommendations for television series to watch told me about Serial and were confident that I would LOVE It.Serial is not a television series, nor a book, but rather a podcast exploring a nonfiction story over multiple episodes. Episodes vary in length and are available weekly. It ranked number one on iTunes even before its debut and remained there for several weeks.
Sarah Koenig hosts the series, and basically is re-investigating the murder of Hae Min Lee. The first episode is described as follows: “It’s Baltimore, 1999. Hae Min Lee, a popular high-school senior, disappears
after school one day. Six weeks later detectives arrest her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. He says he’s innocent – though he can’t exactly remember what he was doing on that January afternoon. But someone can. A classmate at Woodlawn High School says she knows where Adnan was. The trouble is, she’s nowhere to be found.”
I’m currently at episode 8 and have found this is great to listen to when walking or taking long drives to visit my grandmother! I won’t tell you whether or not I think Adnan is guilty….decide for yourself!
Hi Audra,
It was so great to see that you recommended Serial this week. My husband and I are huge NPR fans and got hooked on Serial when the first episode was aired on the radio. The podcast also appealed to me because I graduated from college in ’99 and can relate to all the cultural references.
We listened to Serial while it was happening and would wake up to listen at 5 am every Thursday morning when a new episode would be released! There is an incredible Reddit group for discussions about Serial, but I won’t recommend it unless you are willing to sink hours of your life into it 🙂
I would love to discuss Serial with you when you are done listening, and hear your thoughts.
Hi Audra,
I know AHA is more of a broadcast than a personal email but I had to respond to this because I just finished Episode 8 “the Deal with Jay”(this morning!) and I am so thoroughly confused about this whole story!! I have been avoiding reading about it online because I don’t want to know anything until I finish it. I want to compare notes with you at the end.
Thanks for always sending out interesting information – it keeps me current with Dunwoody and everything that is going on in the world.
This was sent to me after I posted this article: http://observer.com/2015/02/serial-exclusive-the-teachers-of-woodlawn-high-speak-out/
