I’ve been fielding questions about the demolition at the old Chamblee Middle/Shallowford elementary building. Several have also asked about the red phone booth on Chamblee-Dunwoody near Marcos Pizza and Subway. I asked a few Dunwoody City Council members and this is what I learned:
Red Phone Booth: A new pub from the owners of The Dunwoody Tavern is in the works.
School Demolition: DeKalb is demolishing everything but the gym. There are no plans for re-construction at this time.
Fran Millar spoke to the superintendent who says the property will be sold
I went to the community meeting which was held about this and the property is NOT going to be sold. A small portion of the land was sold for the pumping station which went in behind it (perhaps that is what Fran Miller meant?) The county plans to keep the land and rent the gym out to community groups (the gym is newer than the school). My guess is that with all the new housing being built in Dunwoody and with our schools getting full (or in some cases overflowing) they may want to keep the land in case they need another school somewhere down the line. But this is just a guess from me!
Remember back to the “Blue Ribbon Task Force?” One of big recommendations was that the school district not sell any more property. They would never be able to replace ground at the same price.
