Property tax freeze saves Brookhaven taxpayers more than $1 million

DeKalb’s Chief Deputy Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson and Tax Digest Coordinator Larita Ellis were on hand during the city council’s July 7 meeting to remind Brookhaven residents that anyone with a city homestead exemption automatically receives a freeze on property tax assessments.

That freeze has saved Brookhaven taxpayers more than $1 million this year, Ellis said, adding that 9,786 Brookhaven residents have a homestead exemption, with 8,894 of those residents seeing savings this year.

“It’s hundreds of dollars [for each resident],” said Mayor Rebecca Chase Williams, “so it’s no insignificant amount.”

Anyone who gets the homestead exemption automatically receives the freeze and will see those itemized savings on their tax bill.

Residents can apply for homestead exemptions at www.dekalbcountyga.gov/taxcommissioner.
