Ocean Market, a Parisian-inspired bistro located in Downtown Atlanta, is excited to welcome the second installment of its local artist series, featuring work from Atlanta-based, encaustic artist Penny Treese.
Kicking off with an opening night event on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, the evening will feature a live encaustic art demonstration by the artist from 7 to 9 p.m. As art-lovers peruse Treese’s work, which will also be available for purchase, they can enjoy complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres created by Chef Shane McIntosh of Ocean Catering Company and Ocean Market.
Observing the way our culture treats aging as an evil to avoid, Treese’s technique begins with an out-of-focus photograph of a nude woman on thin paper. She distresses the image with water, wine, coffee, salt and cold—natural elements that age the human body. Finally, applying heat to layers of molten unbleached beeswax and vivid pigment, Treese creates a beauty and integrity from her “aged” work—ultimately answering the question “Are beauty and aging contradictions in terms” with an empathic and absolute No.
In a relatively short time, Treese has been accepted and won awards in a number of juried exhibitions including, most recently, winning Best of Show in a group show and competition at the Decatur Market and Gallery, juried by internationally renowned art critic Bill Arnett. In addition to the numerous private and public collections to display her work, Ocean Market is proud to be the latest host of Treese’s most recent collection.
