Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School fifth-graders performed their own version of a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical—”Oklahoma! Jr.”—the week of Feb. 4.
Cowboys and farm girls, as well as ranchers, dancers and peddlers came together on the Fine Arts Building stage, transforming a patch of campus into the expansive 1906 Oklahoma Territory. The musical, which follows the romance of Curly McLain and Laurey Williams, was the first and perhaps most beloved production written by composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II.
Holy Innocents’ production was staged by 74 fifth-graders under the direction of Laura Floyd Wood, a professional actress and the Lower School Drama Teacher, who rewrote much of the script and choreographed the show. Music teacher Alexis Lundy “highlighted the voices of an incredibly talented group of singers whose confidence is enviable,” said Fine Arts Chair Heidi Domescik. “And unflappable Prather Rehm (Fine Arts administrative assistant) is a behind-the-scenes guru, giving tips and encouragement while changing mic packs and managing parents and committees, all with enthusiasm.”
The result was a musical more fun than, well, a surrey with the fringe on top
