Loud Vehicles – Should this issue be addressed?

Update:

82% of our poll takers would support banning vehicles/ticketing drivers with extra loud motors.  18% Would NOT support.   You can review the comments on our website post and our Facebook page but this issue didn’t really seem to create many comments even though most people apparently do not like the loud engines.

A friend asked me recently to investigate why there are so many “loud” vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles etc.) driving around Dunwoody lately. I started asking around and many people seem frustrated with loud cars around Dunwoody and the ones you can hear from our nearby busy Interstates.

I found the following during a Google search “While there are no standards for noise levels, there are some standard laws that apply to all cars in all states and localities: It’s illegal to try and modify your existing muffler to make your car louder. … It’s illegal to drive a car that doesn’t have some kind of muffler.”

Also this: Can a cop pull you over for loud exhaust? In short, yes! So if you’ve modified the vehicle to have a loud exhaust you could be fined for excessive noise, or under the construction and use regulations… but many general duties officers don’t know these regs well enough to be bothered with it.”

I’d love to know your comments and for you to take our very short poll!   Do loud cars bother you….?   Or is this no big deal to you!  Would you support banning vehicles/ticketing drivers with extra loud motors?   Leave a comment please!

Why do some people want their cars to be loud?

  1. While I realize that some people modify their cars to be loud I do not think that it is an issue. I am against ticketing for several reasons. 1. Often people with muffler issues don’t have the money to do repairs so you are penalizing someone who may just not have the money. 2. Who determines what is too loud.. do we have officers out there with a device or does it become subjective and open to all sorts of arguments. 3. While I support the police I hate having them pull people over and ticket for such minor infractions.. too much big brother

  2. I live off Spalding, and the excessively loud vehicles are usually speeding, too, on the straight part between Jett Ferry and Mt Vernon. Yes, I wish the police could patrol this area more.

  3. While I don’t like hearing a lot of loud cars, I am not in favor of issuing tickets or banning vehicles with loud motors. In addition to such an action being a problem for people lacking the funds to repair an engine, that would be another chip away at the freedoms this country was founded upon. The current loud motor problem is a phase and will pass. However, I do object to the excessive siren noise that we now have in Dunwoody from police, fire, and ambulance vehicles. There is certainly a time and place for these vehicles to use sirens so they get where they need to go safely, but it seems like there has to be a way to reduce the amount of time a siren is used without sacrificing safety or tweeking the type of siren sound so it still gets provides the necessary alert without infringing on the rest of us so much.

  4. I have lunch at an Outdoor place on JohnsonFerry Rd. Not only are they cars/trucks loud, but they speed up and race by EVERY day. Have never seen a police stop.
