Holy Innocents’ Senior Collecting Coats & Blankets for Homeless

peter-myer-at-open-doorSANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Last March, Peter Myer, then a junior at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Schoool, wrapped up a drive for the homeless by delivering more than a hundred coats and blankets to the Open Door Community in downtown Atlanta. This year, Myer began the drive early to assist those who find themselves caught in the recent frigid temperatures, with little or no shelter.

Boxes for new and gently used coats and blankets are set up in front of the Upper School at 805 Mt. Vernon Highway NW. The drive is being conducted with cooperation from the Fellowship of Christiah Athletes.

The Open Door Community, at 910 Ponce de Leon Avenue NE, is a residential community for the homeless which serves breakfasts and soup-kitchen lunches, provides showers and changes of clothes, offers a free medical clinic, and conducts worship services, among other services. Last year, when Myer was dropping off his donations, Eduard Loring, a Presbyterian pastor and Open Door co-director, asked him if he knew how to fuel a good heart.

“I said, ‘No, how?’” remembered Myer. “And he said. ‘Help other people.’ It was truly a profound experience to see my work benefiting those in need.”
