High Meadows School, Roswell, Ga., has been named a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, a prestigious distinction that acknowledges the school for its multifaceted efforts in environmental and sustainability education. The areas encompassed in the award include reduced environmental impact and costs, improved health and wellness, and effective environmental and sustainability education.
Acting Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Mike Boots joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan yesterday to announce the award recipients, which included 48 schools from across the nation. High Meadows was one of two recipients in Georgia and one of only nine independent schools in the nation to receive the award.
“The Green Ribbon School designation is a wonderful recognition of all High Meadows has done as a leader among Green Schools across the nation,” said Head of School Jay Underwood. “The award is a great honor and a testament to the fact that our community truly lives its guiding principles.”
The award-winning schools were honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways. Mr. Underwood and Environmental Education Teacher Michelle Griffin will represent High Meadows at the award ceremony in Washington, DC in July.
