Flax Dental is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Why My Teacher Makes Me Smile Scholarship. After reviewing more than 60 applications and essays from students across the state of Georgia, the Flax Dental team picked Meredith Weiss, a 2018 graduate of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta.
Weiss wrote her essay about her favorite teacher, Kacey Michelsen. Michelsen is chair of the history department at Holy Innocents’ and coached Weiss in the school’s Model United Nations Club. He also taught her favorite senior course, International Diplomacy. In her essay, Weiss wrote, “He encouraged me to make bold decisions…and that when you experience a little pushback, it means you’re probably doing something right.”
Dr. Hugh Flax and his staff presented Weiss with the $1,000 scholarship check on June 28. Weiss plans to attend George Washington University and major in International Relations.
Up next, the deadline for Flax Dental’s scholarship for dental hygienists and dental assistants is September 25. This is the third year Flax Dental has offered The Knowledge Matters Flax Dental Scholarship program, which awards $1,000 to a dental hygiene or dental assistant student enrolled at a college in Georgia. For full details on the qualifications and how to apply, visit Flax Dental’s website.
An Atlanta-based accredited cosmetic dentist, Dr. Flax is a dedicated supporter of education and youth. He has personally funded and created multiple scholarships and participates annually in a variety of charitable programs that benefit both local and national causes such as Smiles for Life and One Warm Coat.
Dr. Flax is a past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) and a co-founder of the Georgia Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He lectures nationally and internationally on advanced techniques in cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
“At Flax Dental, we believe that knowledge matters when it comes to dentistry. It takes extensive knowledge and skill to provide patients with the highest standard of dental care. That’s why we like to say, ‘At Flax, Dental, what we know will make you smile.’” said Dr. Flax.
