Over the weekend I watched two thoroughly entertaining old chick flicks that I’d never even heard of! They popped up on my Netflix suggestion list and I highly recommend both of them if you are interested in pure chick flick fun and not expecting a lot of academy award winning acting or plot….An Unfinished Life and In Your Eyes. Alternatively, I recently watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for the first time. Now that’s a movie with phenomenal acting and an intense plot. Strangely entertaining! I’m a little fearful of a long series because I’ve gotten stuck binge watching a few times. Friday Night Lights, Parenthood and Breaking Bad sucked me into a binge coma. Bloodline is my new series obsession (congrats to Ben Mendehlson on last night’s Emmy win)! I’d usually rather read a book but am always welcome to good Netflix movie suggestions. Please leave a comment if you have some good choices for me (& others) to add to our Netflix queue!
House of Cards is great. Recommend binge watching because there are so many plots and details. Watching Parenthood, which I missed when it was on TV, and loving it.
Best recent Netflix movie– “A Little Chaos.” About Louis XIV’s (Alan Rickman)master gardner and a young woman (Kate Winslet) hired to build a special walled garden/ fountain. Produced by Alan Rickman– love anything with him in it RIP Alan.
Orange is the new black of. Course. If you liked downton abbey check out call the midwife. And rectify…… It is about a convicted inmate coming off death row into society in a small GA town.
Stranger Things!
Movie – “If I were you” It’s totally hilarious, a bit goofy. Excellent acting. Books – I liked “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult. Great twist at the end! Also “With Love from the Inside” by Angela Pisel. Debut novel. Good for bookclubs as the author will Skype with you. Audra – I have a copy you can borrow and her cell for contact info if you want the book. Well done!
It’s a long one, but I jyst finished West Wing and was so amazed how history repeats itself!!
Although Bloodlines is my favorite, “Longmire” is great as well as “Heartland.” All we watch is Netflix!!!
Last Chance U: a six-episode documentary on a JUCO school in no-where MS where football players go to work up to Division I or to work their way back to Division I. The academic advisor is a particularly good character. One warning: the coach curses incessantly.
Obsessed with Stranger Things! And it was all shot in, around Atlanta.
Lillyhammer – Very sad it only ran for 3 seasons
Better Call Saul is a great prequel to Breaking Bad. Nurse Jackie is terrific too.
Last Chance U
Stranger Things
SHERLOCK! Great fun to watch!
WOODLAWN is a wonderful family movie, especially if you love football! This is a true story, as well as an inspiring one of how the love of God can unite believers of all races. Not syrupy-sweet either. Bear Bryant makes an appearance too…HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Stranger Things – best to start watching not knowing what it is about. This is not usually my type of show, I would have never picked it out but my hubby and I keep watching to find out what is going on!
I’m with Charles – “Stranger Things” is great! It will suck you in but there are only 8 episodes. My cousin put it best – “it is ET on steroids” Sci-Fi set in 1983 and is a throwback to Spielberg, Stephen King & a little john Carpenter thrown in
Rectify
If you like a mix of sci-fi/horror straight out of the 80s, watch the 8 episodes of “Stranger Things”. Think Poltergeist crossed with E.T. with a touch of Stephen King. My wife and I loved it.
House of Lies (Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell) and Vice Principals
Forgot to mention Stranger Things!
Making of a Murderer was addictive for my husband and I .. I hear there is a part 2 coming
Peaky Blinders- series & cinematography are amazing. you can thank me later…
Gilmore Girls was one of my favorites. So darling. I also LOVE The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s hilarious (kind of in the Ally McBeal genre if you like that–dry humor).
Is Stranger Things acceptable for a 13 year old or is it too much?
Not on Netflix but on iTunes-worth downloading Broadchurch-set in a small town in Scotland, young boy murdered and over Season 1 it is a whodunnit and Season 2 is a continuation the storylines developed in Season 1
Luther is an excellent BBC detective show. Second the Call the Midwife suggestion (narrated beautifully by Vanessa Redgrave. And, yes, Stranger Things! After you finish look up the Jimmy Fallon Tonight show episode when the kids from the show are guests.
I’d second Broadchurch, so so good. The interwebs tells me it’s on Amazon also (it used to be on Netflix…).
Sense8 (Great ..one episode requires parental discretion) ..first episode confusing but gets much better, Shameless (all episodes require parental discretion) but funny family, Stranger things, Jessica Jones ( alternative super woman), Black Mirror – every episode COMPLETELY different but all based on what a technical world could lead too.. very unique and interesting
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries; set in 1920s Australia.
White Collar! Can’t stop watching once you start. A series that we can watch as a family. 13+.
Matt Bomer…need I say more!
Another one I wasn’t too sure of because I really don’t like Jaden Smith but for our *ahem* age group is, “The Get Down”. Set in late 70’s when disco was being taken over by the beginnings of hip hop/rap. NAS is one of the executive producers and it’s co-produced by Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow. Think, Donna Summer, Saturday Night Fever times becoming “Breakin'”, Graffiti, and DJ that would “scratch”. Talent and a love story thrown in. And yes, Jaden Smith did a good job but at least he was only a supporting actor. ;-P Also has Jimmy Smitts in it.
Two must see documentaries “A Girl Like Her” and the new on Netflicks “Audrey and Daisy”. Both should be seen by every parent and school councilor. I love Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things.
OMG you know I love Jimmy Smits
Frankie and Grace with Jane Fondaa and Lily Tomlin is hilarious and they are 30 minute episodes!
Watch The Fall. Gets better at end of series 1 start of series 2
