Not only offering a free yoga class, but expert yogi and founder of Westside Yoga, Amber Barry, also shares a few easy-to-follow tips for making the most of your New Year’s resolutions on the yoga mat, in case it’s of interest to your readers!

Yoga Tips for a Happy and Mindful New Year Courtesy of Amber Barry:

1. Change one habit at a time…and give it time. It’s tempting to make big changes on January 1st, right? We have a fresh start, and we believe this year can be different. The problem with making a lot of changes right out of the gate; however, is that it can overwhelm us. We are more likely to succeed if we make incremental changes, and get grounded in one healthy habit, before we take on another. Create daily rituals that will bring you closer to your goals, and start small, before making bigger challenges.

2. Practice non-attachment. Make every effort to get grounded in new habits, but don’t judge the outcome. Mindfulness teaches us to take action for actions sake, and not be attached to the fruit of the action. If we trust ourselves to make good choices, and continuously do the things that move us in a better direction, good things will come to us in time.

3. Speak kindly to yourself. We tend to be our own worst critics, right? Watch where your mind goes—are you saying things like “I can’t” or “I’ll never”? Learn to separate truth from self-imposed stories, and change the story you tell yourself about what you can, and can’t, do. We are all capable of more than we know, and a positive narrative can go a long way to helping us make meaningful changes in our lives.

4. When all else fails, hit the reset button. It’s normal to get off track with our resolutions, the problem is that we are prone to let one bad choice lead to another. It all starts to add up, and before we know it we are right back where we started. If we find ourselves starting to slip, it’s helpful to remember that every moment is an opportunity to start over. No matter how far you stray from your New Year’s plan, you can always get back on track.
