Earth Day Paint recycling event (4/22)

paintCELEBRATE EARTH DAY BY RECYCLING UNUSED PAINT

Dunwoody Nature Center and the City of Dunwoody Sustainability Commission help residents divert landfill waste with quick, easy drop-off process

April 17, 2013 – Dunwoody, Ga. – As Dunwoody residents take part in the age-old tradition of spring cleaning, what to do with old or unusable household supplies can be a mystery. To help demystify the process, the City of Dunwoody, with the support of Atlanta Paint Disposal, is sponsoring an Earth Day paint recycling event on Monday, April 22, 2013. Residents will have the option of dropping off unwanted paint at two locations, the Dunwoody Nature Center at 5343 Roberts Drive and Brook Run Park at 4470 North Peachtree Road, near the skate park. For a fee of $1 per gallon, residents can drop off any unwanted latex paints and promote healthier air and water quality in the process. Both locations will be open for drop-offs from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. Oil-based paints will not be accepted.

Latex paints often end up in the landfill. Chemicals leached from this paint can have deleterious effects on soil, air and water. Innovative paint disposal operations, such as Atlanta Paint Disposal, have provided an alternative; in addition to separating, bulking and filtering the paint to produce a reusable paint product, Atlanta Paint Disposal donates large quantities of paint to community beautification projects. Their largest quarterly donation goes to the Graffiti Task Force of Atlanta. As Amanda Ayres of Atlanta Paint Disposal points out, “Choosing to recycle your unwanted paint is the only end of life option that allows your community to benefit.  No only does your community benefit–so does the environment.”

The Earth Day paint recycling event is part of a larger effort by the City of Dunwoody to encourage environmentally-friendly behavior among residents. Past events include a household hazardous waste recycling event, an electronics recycling event, community clean-ups and informative workshops on harvesting rainwater and tree care. The City of Dunwoody, the Dunwoody Nature Center and Atlanta Paint Disposal encourage Dunwoody residents to take part in the paint recycling event as a simple, efficient way to help the community.
