Dunwoody High School senior, Daniel Hinton’s Laws of Life essay, “Fall seven times; stand up eight” earned him the “George Stewart, Jr. Character In Action Award”. The award is presented to the best student writer who describes discovering an invaluable character trait and then puts it into action.
The award is named for Dunwoody resident and Rotary member, George Stewart, Jr., who helped establish the competitive essay contest called the “Laws of Life Essay Contest.” A record-breaking 45,233 Georgia high school students wrote a Laws of Life essay this year.
The Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest is a character education and ethical literacy program for high school students, grades 9 – 12. The contest asks students to select a Law of Life or maxim (such as “Honesty is the best policy,” or “To give is better than to receive”), and to write a personal essay explaining how the Law of Life applies to the student’s life. The program challenges students to reflect upon core values such as perseverance, generosity, courage and compassion, and it rewards those students who are willing to take a stand for their beliefs. The essay contest is conducted each year by the Georgia Rotary Clubs. “
Daniel has been awarded an athletic scholarship to Lindsey Wilson College, which is located in Columbia, KY.
