The news buzzed around Dunwoody High School’s hallways during the day Thursday following a football team meeting: Coach Jim Showfety announced he was stepping down from the Wildcats’ football program. Under his leadership this past season, the team managed a 4-6 record, with two of those wins coming against a winless Clarkston squad. The four victories marked the most in a single season in any of Dunwoody’s last three seasons. Despite the lower than hoped for win totals, Showfety was a benefactor on and off the field to the players and others that he worked with.
Without a h
ead coach in place, the long list of to-dos for the football program before the 2015 season only gets longer. Showfety, after five seasons with the Wildcats, exits with one of the biggest and most talented senior classes Dunwoody has seen in over a decade. Although the season lies nearly a year away, the adjective already being tossed around among students and fans regarding the upcoming season is ‘reconstructive.’
Showfety’s team created plenty of highlights to keep morale high regardless of the situation in what turned out to be his final season. In the biggest game of the year, the blackout against Chamblee, his coaching abilities helped get the job done, enabling his players to hoist the inaugural Golden Spike in a close victory. The other significant win came against Lakeside, a smaller rivalry but still one with history, giving the Wildcat fan base a few big moments to cheer about.
