If you get a chance then please watch the English version of Downton Abbey. Much better. So much gets cut out in the US version. The ending of last night was actually the end of the Christmas special in the UK (a whole other episode).
Hi Audra,
The shows creator did not necessarily want to end the show that way, with Matthew’s demise, but the actor playing the part wanted to leave the series to do other things, and had not signed on for another season. I understand season four will have a story line pertaining to possible Mary suitors. The producers have been auditioning several actors and have not found the right one yet.
Personally, I like to see more of the wild cousin featured next season.

Of course I was sad and shocked to see Matthew die because he is such a likable character. However, the storyline with so much love and happiness for the couple was lacking the drama and angst that makes for an interesting plot. Love Downton Abbey overall.
Hello Audra!
I’ll tell you, that after finding “Downton Abbey” on my own back in December (I had no idea it existed until one night I was just channel surfing, and ran into the show’s reruns of Season One and Two), and then getting hooked into watching it on Sunday nights, I was frustrated at the Season 3 ending lat night. Julian Fellowes jumped the shark, needlessly, in doing what he and the other writers did. The fascinating thing about the entire show was learning how the then-changing world affected—both in positive and negative ways, and how each character, as subjects of the King, reacted, and how they adapted to those changes in society. I like character development as much as anyone. But you stop learning when they did what they did. And that was a shame. They turned the show into a soap.
Somebody tell me what “Her Ladyship’s sop” is! I haven’t a clue!!!
I agree they have turned it into a soap. And I got suspicious when Matthew got so excessively happy and gooey. As I hear it, the actor had a 3 yr contract and didn’t want to renew. Same for a female character. I don’t know which one. Maybe someone does. I saw a picture of one of Mary’s possible suitors who was very yummy. They don’t let anyone grieve very long do they? And poor Edith. She keeps falling in love with flawed characters. The time line seems to be getting very contracted. Maybe they will bring back the “Patrick” character. that would complicate things. How do I find the English version?
