DeKalb School of the Arts presents Rogers and Hart’s “On Your Toes.” This musical from 1936, first directed by the legendary George Abbott and choreographed by then newcomer George Balanchine, marked the first use of classical ballet in a musical comedy and dance as a direct proponent of the plot.
Junior, an ex-vaudevillian now teaching music at Knickerbocker University, enlists the help of patroness Peggy Porterfield to persuade Sergei Alexandrovich, the director of the Russian Ballet, to stage his student’s jazzy “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue” ballet. Junior becomes involved with the company’s prima ballerina, Vera Barnova, arousing the jealousy of her boyfriend, Konstantine — as well as the disappointment of Frankie, who loves Junior.
