This spring, the Master Gardeners of the Dunwoody Nature Center are doing something a little different. We’re offering you some of our favorite plant ‘Recipes” for sun and shade containers. “Recipes” will include some native perennials, annuals, herbs, and veggies as well. Some will include perennials that will stay from year to year and allow you to only change out the annuals. New to containers? Here’s your chance to start. Just choose one of our hand selected combos and make your own container with the plants we’re offering—all you have to do is assemble! For your convenience, we’ll have small bags of potting soil available for you to buy when you pick up your plants.

Want to spruce up your garden even more? Add some garden art from our selection of beautiful glass garden art created by a local artist, Jan Steger. Get one for yourself and a gift for a good friend! Remember, all proceeds support the programs and operations of the Nature Center. Also, don’t miss our Pass-a-long Sale when you pick up your plants. We’ll have rescued plants, seedlings, and some used, but still good, containers!

First, a primer on successful container gardening:

No matter the size or material, your pot must have drain holes
Choose plants that have the same sun/shade requirements (we’ve done that for you!)
Use potting soil only (no soil from your garden, it won’t drain or aerate well)
Check soil in container often for moisture; they dry out quickly
Water thoroughly when watering
Fertilize, but not too often (time release fertilizer is an easy answer!)

The three elements of a good container design:

The Thriller – the tall focal point
The Fillers – plants that fill in around your ‘Thriller’
The Spillers – plants that spill over the edges of the container
