The Online Concert Fundraiser Supports CAC
The Sandy Springs and Dunwoody communities are coming together in a variety of ways to support their neighbors hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic. One such effort is from a group of talented music students who are set to perform Corona-Aid on Sunday April 5, a live online music event to raise money to support local families in need.
Eric Abel, a Georgia Tech student from Sandy Springs who was taking time off to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, wanted to do something to help while he finishes his semester online. He and 6 musician friends from Berklee and GA Tech decided to play their music for a cause.
“We wanted to do something, to raise money and help people, and determined that CAC is the best beneficiary to get money directly to families in need,” said Kevin Abel, Eric’s father.
Eric, with the help of his father, began distributing news of Corona-Aid to their contacts near and far, including in the Atlanta area, the GA Tech and Berklee communities. The live music fundraiser has raised $15,000 in donations so far. Online Corona-Aid donations can be made now, during the concert and after!
This Sunday, April 5, at 5 pm tune into Facebook live to enjoy toe-tapping, pop music performances by each musician! The concert will be streamed on Facebook Live at www.facebook.com/KevinAbelForChange
Residents are helping in many other ways. About 50 volunteers a week are giving time at the CAC Food pantry to help distribute food to individuals and families seeking food assistance. Others are donating food or making financial contributions. About a dozen neighborhoods and congregations are holding online group funding drives for CAC. More than $100,000 has been donated to CAC online in the last few weeks!
The funding won’t last long as requests for assistance have increased to 4 times the average. In the last two weeks CAC is giving about double the amount of financial assistance than is typically distributed, with higher dollar amounts to more families so that they can pay rent and remain in their homes.
