Chesnut Charter Elementary School is pleased to report that teachers Mr. Mark Chicoine, Ms.Ginna Hobgood and Ms. Leah Little, as well as school counselor Ms. Betty Sule, have completed Fernbank Science Center’s School Master Gardener program and have been certified as School Master Gardeners by The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service in DeKalb County College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Chesnut’s Master Gardeners also received the 2013 Tin Cup Award, for having garnered the most garden grant funding of their graduating class (more than $9,000), and were recognized with a certificate for Chesnut’s 2013 Ecology Club “for their commitment to growing an environment where students can learn and achieve.”
The School Master Gardener program, which Chesnut’s Master Gardeners completed in one year, encompassed learning how to teach engaging interdisciplinary lessons in Chesnut’s outdoor classroom, learning new gardening and landscaping techniques tailored to the needs of Chesnut, and the completion of a mandatory 50 hours of volunteer service working at the school garden with Chesnut’s students and the community.
