Book Review by Tyler Sacks, DHS Senior – Class of 2018
Lightning flashes. Coils spark. A large lifeform stirs on a slab that is surrounded with various gadgets and medical equipment. The creature sits upright and lets out a groan. He then stands, towering at 8-ft. tall, covered in dark green skin, with metal bolts protruding from either side of his head, which is covered in jet black hair.… Read More »

Everyone knows that I’m an avid reader. Book suggestions fly at me from friends, social media, book clubs, local authors, my family, Goodreads, etc. However, one of my favorite ways to discover new titles is to see what people are reading in the airport and on airplanes. It used to be much easier when people read “real” books and you could just spy the titles on the backs of books.… Read More »
My girlfriend Lisa B. gave me this book a few months ago. It’s written by an acquaintance of hers (Annabel Monaghan) from her days living in Rye, NY. I read a few chapters, laughed out loud a lot, then someone moved it (probably me) and I couldn’t find it.
Note from Audra: This is an interesting, thought provoking article in the AJC about race, drugs, and prison written by one of my favorite authors. She’s actually the first author I convinced to come to my house for a book club meeting many years ago when we read Gods in Alabama.
Personal Journeys: Paths not taken

Thank you for the recommendation and for loaning me your paperback Lisa Beiger! I’m reading this book next…here’s the initial description from Amazon: “In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women-a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947-are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.”… Read More »
I LOVE this book! My friend Kristin suggested this book because she knows how much Apalachicola, Florida means to me. She devoured it quickly and told me she knew I would enjoy…she was oh so right! I love the story, the characters, and the setting….I feel like I’m in Apalachicola with Maisy and Georgia.… Read More »
I’ve hired DHS rising senior, Tyler Sacks to write a few book reviews for The Aha! Connection this summer. His first one is so good that maybe we’ll just ask him to keep on writing throughout his senior year! He made me want to download The Fix right away! Here’s how Tyler describes himself:
“I am 17 and a rising senior at Dunwoody High. … Read More »
A local couple is considering opening an independent bookstore in Dunwoody Village. However, they are doing their homework first and want to find out if the citizens of Dunwoody would be supportive of the idea.
They told me “We just want to take the temperature of folks in Dunwoody on their thoughts about having an independent book store in the area.”… Read More »

A mutual friend that I share with this local author gave me Jaybird’s Song to read several weeks ago. It finally made it to the top of my reading pile and I enjoyed reading it last week. I particularly savor novels set in Atlanta and could genuinely relate to the main character as she is just a wee bit older than me. … Read More »
My good friend Mary K. chose this book for our Meadowlake Book club next month. I must admit I was skeptical even though she showed me before and after pictures of family members who have adapted the new lifestyle discussed in the book. However, I started reading it and am fascinated….I think you will be too!… Read More »
Let me just say I must have read this book when it first came out in paperback circa 2012 because I own the actual book..didn’t read it on Kindle. I remember thinking that it was a great read. I just researched and saw that I rated it 5 stars on Goodreads. I also remember thinking that it was an interesting insight into why the main character committed suicide and a good lesson for high schoolers to realize that how they treat people can be the difference in life and death. … Read More »
