NORCROSS, Ga. — It’s a story that involves underdogs, a buzzer beater and a bold prediction.
The eighth grade boys basketball team at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Norcross made it to last week’s championship game in a middle school tournament.
They were the underdogs, and they were also down a player. Scott Nations was in the hospital after an emergency appendectomy.
The morning of the big game, Scott’s entire class signed a get well card. Teammate Owen Stegenga went a step further, adding the message, “We will win the championship in your honor.”
That night, the team trailed by 10 points at halftime, and was down two points with four seconds left in the game.
Owen stepped up and shot a buzzer beater — a three-pointer, no less — to eek out a 56-55 win.
It was a promise fulfilled — and the best kind of medicine.
