American Literature Requirements for DHS Students
Burger Boy is taking American Literature at Dunwoody High next semester.  This is the required English course for all DHS Juniors.  His book worm Mama is so excited that he will be forced to read novels that I couldn’t wait to find out what he’s going to be reading so we can discuss together!

I’m mildly disappointed.  I wish the DHS Language Arts faculty would ask me for my input!  He’ll have to read two or three of the following (depending on his teacher):

The Catcher in the Rye

by J.D. Salinger

I despise this rambling book.  Interestingly enough, Burger Boy read this in 9th grade at Holy Innocents’ and loved it.   Dadgummit..I wanted him to read another book…not one he has already read..

The Great Gatsby

by F. Scott Fitzgerald by Scribner

I think this book is “okay”.  There are such better choices out there though so I’m disappointed in this non-original choice.   I predict many kids will just watch the DiCaprio movie and try to get away with not reading the book.

Their Eyes Were Watching God

by Zora Neale Hurston

I bought this book a while ago and have always wondered if I’m distantly related to the author somehow.  (note my name is Audra Hurston Anders) and she was born in Notasulga, Alabama which is minutes from my hometown.   I’m very excited about this one and plan to read it over the holidays.

Yes, I’m a nerd.   I’m already looking forward to British Literature in 12th grade.  Someone remind me I’m not in high school anymore.

I’d love to know what kids in other area high schools are reading for their
American Literature requirements.  Please comment on this post if you can tell me what your North Springs, Chamblee, Norcross,  Marist, Wesleyan, Pius, MVP, HIES etc kids are reading for American Lit!!   Or you can email me if that is easier.

  1. I work at an all-girls high school. Our American Literature classes read Fahrenheit 451, The House of the Seven Gables, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Our Town, A Raisin in the Sun, Ella Minnow Pea, and When the Emperor Was Divine.
