I just adore my friend Laura Hogan. She and I were in a conversation about books and when she mentioned she’d read more than 50 audible books this year and was looking for a LONG book to choose next I suggested The Winter Sea and offered her a challenge. I’m way behind on my reading and was going to forego a book of the week for The Aha! Connection but suggested that she tell me her three favorite books of this year to share with Aha! She’s such an awesome friend because she sat down and wrote the following suggestions for us right after cooking dinner for her family and gave me FOUR not three! I’m personally downloading the first three books immediately. The third was recommended by my mom last week and is waiting for me on my Kindle.
Begin Laura’s message:
My favorite books so far this year are:
This is a two book series so I can’t separate them because they’re both so good I listened to both in a week. Betsy Wagner actually came over and we shared headphones to listen because they were that good!
Caroline Kepnes YOU, and Hidden Bodies. It is about an atypical serial killer, Joe, who tells the story in the first person. You actually find sympathy (albeit twisted sympathy) with his explanation and rationalization for his crimes. You get completely engaged with each victim and wait on the edge of your seat to see what happens next.
– A Little Life- This is about 4 college roommates from Massachusetts who go out and live their lives in New York City. It’s a long book and starts a little slow, but once you start learning each of their stories you cannot stop listening (or reading). This book has stayed with me longer than almost any book I’ve ever read.
Martha Hall Kelly- Lilac Girls- I’ll go ahead and pick this one since you haven’t read it yet. I absorb every book about the Holocaust I can get my hands on. This one is unique in that the story is told from the perspective of someone working at the French consulate in the states, a courier for the resistance (who becomes a prisoner), and a German doctor who winds up working in the concentration camp. Though the book is fiction it is based loosely on actual events.
