A funny thought popped into my head as I was packing for my trip to Ireland and trying to decide what book to download for the long plane ride. My thought: “What if I read a novel set in Ireland?”
I googled this and of course Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes rose to the top but alas, I’ve read that one and I wanted something lighter anyway. I already watched the movie Brooklyn based on the book by Colm Tóibín and although I loved it, I wanted a new story. I’m not even sure where/how I stumbled upon Where the Pink Houses Are but I’m so glad I did.
Be forewarned, at first I thought it was a little hokey. The author certainly isn’t Jane Austen but I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what happened to Brenna and figure out why Ryan was behaving so strangely. As it turns out, Rebekah Ruth is a Christian author and based this story somewhat on the Biblical book of Ruth. That fact made me enjoy this Irish tale even more. Lucky for me there’s a second book in this series that picks up with one of my favorite characters! Stay tuned for my review of Where the Yellow Flowers Grow!
