Book Review – Divergent by Veronica Roth

Someone told me this weekend that The Divergent Trilogy is going to be “the next big Hunger Games!” I’ve noticed it on the shelves of Barnes & Noble and was curious but since I’m a huge Hunger Games fan I couldn’t resist the temptation to start book one (Divergent) ASAP. The motion picture will be released in March of 2014 and I always recommend reading a book before seeing the movie. I started Saturday night and finished last night. Yes, I’m a quick reader but this is definitely a page turner! If you (or your kids) like The Hunger Games, you’ll like Divergent. It takes place in  futuristic Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). All sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice (Tris), the decision is between staying with her family or being who she really is—she can’t have both. She makes a choice in the beginning that starts the pages of the book flipping like mad!

Remember – I read all genres of books and have extremely varied tastes.   One thing I really enjoy about this particular book is that it is appealing to teenagers.  I have teenagers and discussing books with my boys is one of my favorite things to do!  Now, I’ve just got to get one of them to read my copy!

If you’ve read it and care to make a comment then please do so…I’d love to know what you think!  The comments forum on this post is open!

  1. I am on the third book and I have loved them all. The first and second books I finished in about 2 days, I put everything else in life on hold. I really enjoyed the comparisons of the various factions and their positive aspects. Then, as the story goes on we see the negative side to the strength and how that entices people who started out with a very high calling. Human nature, an endlessly fascinating subject!
