Book review by DHS Junior, Christy Holloway
The Dunwoody High School Book Club chose to read The Rain by Virginia Bergin for the month of February. This slightly sci-fi novel is narrated by sassy and expressive Ruby who documents her experience when the rain turns poisonous. There’s something in the rain that kills you instantly if you get just one drop on your skin, and millions of people around the world are dying quickly. After Ruby somehow manages to live, her only chance of survival is to travel to London where her father lives. The Rain has elements of adventure and survival as Ruby tries to find her father and is forced to learn how to survive in a world that has gone mad. Along the way, she teams up with a nerdy classmate, a silent little girl, and 2 dogs in her quest. Although they face many deeply disturbing and sad experiences, Ruby’s personality and inner monologue keep the book from being one that belongs in the horror genre. Dunwoody Book Club gave The Rain ⅘ stars because of it’s humor, adventure, and unique spin on a dystopian theme.
