When all of my middle school friends (and my brother) were watching MTV and Night Tracks, I preferred to take in a ballgame with the Atlanta Braves on TBS. If the Braves weren’t broadcasting on television, I was listening to Skip, Ernie and Pete on the radio and hoping they’d call my name during the Goody’s Headache powder Homerun Jackpot. Bob Horner, Dale Murphy and my all time fave, #22 -Brett Butler, got me through some serious late night babysitting gigs. I didn’t outgrow my love for baseball. I was cheering on my best guy friends at most home and away Opelika High School Bulldog games. In college I was an official “Diamond Doll” for my beloved Auburn Tigers. Lucky for me, one of my post college roomies worked in Guest Relations for the Atlanta Braves! Free tickets for every home game…OMG. JACKPOT. Sadly, none of my girlfriends wanted to trek to Fulton County Stadium after work, so I would drag along this really sweet guy friend of mine. Dale Murphy night, the evening the Braves retired #3….that was the night I made up my mind that I wanted to marry the wonderful man who accompanied me to all the Braves games.
Fast forward 23 years from Dale Murphy night. We have two teenagers who have been playing baseball since they could lift a bat. These days, we literally spend every night of the week watching the Dunwoody Wildcats play baseball. Fulton County Stadium was a parking lot before my oldest was born. However, he visited “The Ted” as often as he could. Like many, our family has mixed feelings about whether or not the Braves “really needed” a new stadium. Nonetheless, when invited by the Braves to tour SunTrust park last Saturday, I jumped at the chance. Hubby and youngest son had a DHS game to attend, so my oldest hit the jackpot this time and gladly accompanied his Mama to the ball park.
Over the next few weeks I’m going to write a few short articles and share some of our pictures from the tour. I’ll focus on the family friendliness/fun, the amazing variety of seat locations/views, the parking…which the Braves are doing their best to be innovative with, and since Burger Boy was the lucky one to attend with me you can bet we’ll have an article about the FOOD! In fact, Burger Boy’s Varsity game for this evening was rescheduled so what did he do? He bought tickets to tonight’s Braves vs Yankees exhibition game at #SunTrustPark! Stay tuned for more about SunTrust park from Burger Boy and his baseball fanatic Mama. Oh, and guess what number Burger Boy wears when he plays…..? #22 for his Mom’s favorite Brave, Brett Butler.
