Perhaps you’ll make time for a movie or two during Spring Break so I’ve decided y’all might like a short and sweet review of a few flicks I’ve seen lately. I binged watched a few Oscar faves at home a few weeks ago and I went to see an ADORABLE movie last night. I’m most excited about a movie I’m seeing tomorrow with my family: I Can Only Imagine….more on that when I’ve seen it.
I’ve listed them in order of my faves 1st to last….
- The Miracle Season – nope…not an Oscar winner and it won’t be released to the public for a few days. My husband loved it, my son loved it. I loved it. The audience was full and cheered often throughout the movie and clapped uproariously at the end! It’s true. It makes you sad. It makes you happy. I related to every single character. The world needs more movies like this.
- I, Tonya – I saved this for the end of my Oscar binging because I honestly wasn’t very excited about seeing it. Gosh, was I wrong. It was funny, entertaining, and macabre all at the same time. I had no idea about Tonya’s horrifying mother or abusive husband. I didn’t realize she was such a redneck. Please note I’m from Alabama and am related to and love many rednecks and certainly have my own proud redneck moments. But…wow…I was hooked upon seeing the wacky opening text that appears onscreen: “based on irony-free, wildly contradictory, totally true interviews with Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly”
- The Shape of Water – This one won best picture. I read the book first and thought it was good but not great…and definitely odd. The movie follows the book very closely but doesn’t really help you understand why Strickland’s character is so hell bent on killing “the asset” so I’m sure those who only see the movie will be confused about him. I’m glad I saw it but….it was definitely strange. I believe they are trying to connect the fact that Elisa was found by the water as a baby and ends up with the water creature in the end as a fateful circumstance. However, they don’t make it terribly obvious in the book or movie so I think many will think this movie (and book) are just plain strange.
- Darkest Hour – Let me just start by saying that I LOVE the Netflix series The Crown. I’m a Winston Churchill fan. My husband and 16 year old enjoyed Darkest Hour. They love history. Gary Oldman played Churchill phenomenally. (He won the Oscar for best Actor) His make up artist clearly deserved the Academy Award he received for best make-up and hairstyling. I personally fell asleep during this movie and decided I think I would have liked Dunkirk better. Coincidentally, Darkest Hour is really about what is going on behind the scenes of Dunkirk. Dunkirk is on my list to watch soon.
- Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri – Hate is too strong of a word and I won’t use it to describe my feelings about a movie but I really did not enjoy it. Actually, it was too full of…..hate….which is probably why I didn’t like it. I don’t think there were any scenes without strong filthy language either. The way Frances McDormand’s character talked to her son…oh my. Plus, you never even get to find out who killed her daughter nor why. This movie was not for me. Frances M won a best actress award for this movie. Sam Rockwell also took home an Oscar for best supporting actor.
