First let me point out how much I love the movie poster for this film.  The shadows of Mickey and Mary are simply genius…..I adore this!

Secondly, I certainly spent more time with Mickey Mouse this year than any other year in my life.  Therefore, it was a pleasant surprise to receive such a wonderful lesson in Walt Disney history through the excellent story telling abilities of Tom Hanks (Walt Disney) and Emma Thompson (P.L. Travers.)

The movie illustrates the story of Author P. L. Travers reflecting on her difficult childhood while meeting with filmmaker Walt Disney during production for the adaptation of her novel, Mary Poppins.  Walt tried for 20 years to talk her into letting him make the movie before finally convincing her!

I was in my hometown with a zillion relatives around and we invited everyone to go to the movie with us.  Interestingly enough, none of the children wanted to go….only the 7 adult women and Uncle Jerome!  I tell you this to say that football won out for the men and boys in our family.  All of us thoroughly enjoyed the movie.  There were lots of tears at the end and discussion of our amazement at not ever having heard the story…. behind the story …of Mary Poppins.  It was the perfect holiday movie for us!  Please note that it isn’t your typical light-hearted Disney film….probably not one your kids will particularly enjoy (like Frozen-which my niece opted for instead) but definitely a great film with a very interesting story.traversbook_3
