What books should we read on Spring Break?

I’m going to be packing for Spring Break soon and need a new book to read.  Tell us what you are taking with you to read for Spring Break or tell us about a book you’ve read recently that we need to read ourselves!

  1. The Cherokee Rose, by Tiya Miles. It was on the 2015 list of books that all Georgians should read. A historical novel about Georgia written by a Georgian. Makes one wants to visit Chief Vann House in Chatsworth to see where it all took place. A great read..one of the best I’ve read in a while.

  2. Have you read BEARTOWN?….awesome! Just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and really enjoyed it. Friendship helps a damaged woman overcome her damaging childhood and find happiness! Several months ago I loved Before We Were Yours…young children stolen from poor families and “sold” to wealthy ones who could not have their own. Based on a TRUE STORY!! Memphis TN.

  3. Hi Audra,

My cousin wrote a book that is getting fabulous reviews. It is funny, sad, witty and in some areas a true tear jerker. It’s a true story about the suicide of her brother- my cousin. But it will make you laugh too

Comfort Food Diaries. My quest for the perfect dish to mend a broken heart by Emily Nunn

She actually came to Dunwoody in October and participated in a book club.
    Hope you like it!!

    Thanks,

    Toni

  4. Hey, this is not a Spring Break book, but my husband and I are reading “40 Days to a Joy-Filled Life” by Tommy Newberry. I gave one to my husband (and one to myself) for Valentines Day, which also happened to be Ash Wednesday, so we could read it together during Lent. It is not a Lenten book though….is appropriate for anytime of year. It turns out the author is an Atlanta based Christian life coach and author. My husband and I have loved it. Each day there is a short chapter (very short, more like a daily devotional) followed by an exercise, thought for the day, and prayer. The focus of the book has been exercising gratitude and abundant joy….even when life seems hard. I’ve given it as gifts to several people now…..it’s $9.99 on Amazon

  5. The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane-Lisa See, Beartown-Fredrik Backman, The Last Painting of Sara De Vos-Dominic Smith, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie-Alan Bradley, Before We Were Yours-Lisa Wingate, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for An Eye-David Lagercrantz 4th in Dragon Tatoo Series. You’re going to have a hard time figuring out which books to read from all the great suggestions everyone is providing!

  6. I recommend “Nobody’s Cuter Than You” by Melanie Shankle. In her memoir, Melanie shares her humorous and touching lessons about friendship that she has learned in her life. My favorite parts are her stories from Texas A&M and being a Diamond Darling for the baseball team. Hilarious and refreshing.

  7. Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly — Newberry award winner, so it is aimed at children, but it is delightful!
Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren – scientist who taught & did research at GA Tech. She sure can write!
Not new, but if you have not read it, try Bel Canto by Ann Patchett … PEN/Faulkner & Orange Prize.
I did not see the film, but recently read Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. Excellent, Bellwether Prize for social justice.
Mysteries: Trudy Nan Boyce’s series featuring Atlanta PD detective Sara Alt.

  8. I am reading Eleanor oliphant is Completely Fine and loving it. So sweet. I would love to read the one about the Chief Vann House — that’s going on my list!

  9. The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd – the life journeys of a slave girl and her 11 yo female owner; set in Charleston SC.
