We have had several concerns in reference to golf carts on Dunwoody roadways. We have created some Frequently Asked Questions regarding golf carts on the roadway in Dunwoody and want to be sure everyone is clear on the definitions and the law.
- What is the definition of a golf cart?
- A golf cart is defined as a motor vehicle that is generally designed for operation on a golf course or for sporting or recreation and is not capable of exceeding 20 mph.
- What is a low-speed vehicle?
- A Low-speed vehicle is any four-wheeled electric vehicle whose top speed attainable in one mile is greater than 20 miles per hour but not greater than 25 miles per hour on a paved level surface and which is manufactured in compliance with those federal motor vehicle safety standards for low-speed vehicles (Headlights, Taillights, Front and rear turn signals, Brake lights, Windshield, VIN number, etc.) set forth in 49 C.F.R. Section 571.500 and in effect on January 1, 2001.
- Can a golf cart be driven on the roadway?
- Golf carts may not be operated on city, county, or state maintained roads unless the local governing authority has passed an ordinance stating that they may. (O.C.G.A. 40-6-331)
- Are golf carts allowed to be driven on the roadway in Dunwoody?
- The City of Dunwoody has not passed any ordinances allowing golf carts to be driven on the roadway. Golf carts are also prohibited on sidewalks.
