Through a series of scenes inspired by the Mexican culture, LUZIA blends the sound of light (luz in Spanish) and lluvia (rain). With an amazing series of visual surprises and breathtaking acrobatic performances, LUZIA cleverly brings to the stage multiple places, faces and sounds of Mexico taken from both tradition and modern times. Some of the elements of the show include an on-stage waterfall, a first for Cirque du Soleil.
My friend and I continued to gasp and clap throughout the show. At intermission we chatted giddily about the vibrant colors and the fantastic costumes. The water/rain feature was truly phenomenal. Not only did the performers use the rain as part of the show, but the rain was a performance in and of itself. The physical athletic abilities of the Cirque performers was extraordinary as usual. And the music….it was my favorite of all Cirque shows. It doesn’t hurt that I studied Spanish for years and love the language, the culture and the music. We particularly liked the fact that the musicians were a huge part of the show where normally they seem to be more “backstage”. My friend Elizabeth referred to the show as a “visual extravaganza!” I agree….although the contortionist kinda freaked me out 🙂
I say this show is perfect for 1st graders, grandparents and all ages in between!
The show runs September 14th through November 19th at Atlantic Station with tickets starting at $35. I’m working on getting some discount codes for Aha! Subscribers so stay tuned!
p.s. We had several “celebrity sightings” which is always fun….Chipper Jones and family, Alton Brown and his daughter, Mac Powell and his wife, and Josh McDermitt from the Walking Dead…just to name a few!
