Isakson Welcomes Dunwoody Student as New Senate Page

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., has selected Andrew Zach, a rising high school senior from Dunwoody, Ga., to serve in the U.S. Senate Page Program in Washington, D.C.

“Andrew is an ideal student to complete the Senate Page Program, and I appreciate his interest in serving as our Senate page,” said Isakson. “I hope that this opportunity will be a wonderful learning opportunity for him and aid him in the future.”

Zach began serving as a Senate page for the first session of the summer program on June 12, 2017. The session ends on June 30, 2017.

Zach is a student at Marist School in Atlanta, Ga., where he maintains a rigorous class schedule of advanced placement courses and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is also a member of his school’s policy debate team and the diversity club, as well as a staff writer on the school’s newspaper called the “Blue and Gold.” Zach’s strong interest in international affairs led to his participation in the Model United Nations program and Model Arab League. He also was selected to serve as teen adjudicator at the DeKalb County Juvenile Court and volunteers with Centro Hispano Marista, where he tutors students and helps members of the Hispanic community earn their General Education Development degree.

The Senate Page Program is an enduring tradition dating back to 1829, when the first Senate page was appointed by Senator Daniel Webster. Female students began receiving Senate page appointments in 1971. Senate pages are required to be high school juniors and at least age 16.

Isakson is allowed to appoint one Senate page from Georgia per session and there are typically four sessions per year – fall, spring, and two shorter sessions over the summer.

Senate page duties include preparing the Senate chamber for sessions, delivering legislation and correspondence inside the Congressional compound and distributing statutes and amendments on the Senate floor. Senate pages who serve in the fall and spring also must attend academic classes each morning at the fully-accredited U.S. Senate Page School before reporting for duty on the Senate floor.
