It’s hard to go wrong with freshly made tacos and tequila, and Jefe’s in Brookhaven does not disappoint. Located in Town Brookhaven, Jefe’s offers a variety of appetizers, tacos and quesadillas, as well as a list of margaritas and other mixed drinks.
Chips and salsa are complimentary. The salsa is a chipotle pepper style and the chips were just a wee bit salty but not bad. I decided to branch out and try a smoked pineapple margarita, which proved to be too smoky for my taste and was promptly swapped out for a satisfying house margarita. There are no draft beers – only bottles and cans but a nice variety for almost any beer drinkers.
We ordered four tacos: Baja Chicken, Fajita Steak, Al Pastor (pork and pineapple) and Bravocado. Many of the tacos can be prepared gluten-free (yay Audra!). Both the Baja Chicken and the Al Pastor were prepared with the “fiery orange sauce,” which definitely carried a little kick. The chicken was slightly crispy and delicious, but if I ordered it again, I would get it without the sauce. The Fajita Steak was delightfully thin-sliced with a comfortable helping of onions, peppers and cilantro. The Bravocado, a fried avocado taco with black beans, corn and pico was a pleasant surprise, even for meat-eaters. The manager informed us that one of their chefs, a veteran of Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, is an expert meat smoker. It showed!
Tacos do not include side dishes; however you may select from several options a la carte. We chose Mexican creamed corn. Grilled and sliced fresh off the cob, the corn dish included a creamy sauce that was drizzled over the corn along with cilantro and seasoning. Delicious!
Jefe’s offers a few options for children, though they were not printed on the regular menu. They also advertised a brunch menu with unlimited sangria coming soon.
We went early on a week night so the dining area was not crowded. The bar area includes a number of TVs showing sports, so I imagine it could fill up on a popular game night. We look forward to returning to sample even more Mexican goodness!
