I’m so thankful my friend Miriam chose this book for our Meadowlake Book club, otherwise I’m not sure I would have ever picked it up. The ending…..oh my! I had to read the last chapter three times to make sure I could come to grips with the finale.
From the very beginning I loved Fereiba and really felt like we would be friends. When she is forced to flee Kabul with their three children, I kept trying to picture myself living in her shoes. Her oldest, Saleem, is the same age as my 9th grader. Throughout his awful struggles to survive on his own when separated from Fereiba and his siblings, I kept asking myself “what if Walt was Saleem?” Sadly, he was hungry often so when packing meals at the Foodstock event on Saturday I couldn’t stop thinking about how Saleem would have been so appreciative to have this food.
This book is a great read. I’m looking forward to the discussion at Book Club.

I did read this book and thought it seemed realistic given what is happening in the world today. I very much enjoyed it. Not a 5 star, but a solid 4.
I want to know more about the Meadowlake book club. How many neighbors belong? Do you allow new members? How often do you meet?
