Let me start by telling you that this is the first time I’ve ever read a Stephen King novel. Sure, I know he is brilliant but my brain thinks horror when I see his name on a book and horror just isn’t my genre. But my workout and reading buddy, Beth, was raving about it and I almost always like what she suggests. This book is not a horror story and I’m glad I listened to her. I became OBSESSED with finishing this book. Unfortunately for my family (whom I neglected for a week) it is 900 pages long or alternatively 30 hours if listening on Audible. I alternated between reading my Kindle and listening anywhere and everywhere I went via Audible. I finally finished last night about 11 PM. Today I miss Jake…and the narrator. Another friend, Laura, started the book a few days after me and she told me this morning that of the 140+ Audible narrators she’s listened to, narrator Craig Wasson “rates as one of the best!”
I rate everything I read on a scale of 1-5. I give mostly “3” for books unless I just really can’t recommend anyone read it. Books that I rate a 4 are in my opinion really really good and highly recommended. If I give a book a 5 (which is rare) then I just LOVED LOVED LOVED it, couldn’t put it down, and miss it when I’m finished. This one gets a 5.
Okay, enough rambling…let me tell you what it is about so you can decide if you want to pick it up. Jake Epping, a high school English teacher living in 2011 discovers a time portal that transports him back in time to September 9, 1958 at 11:58 AM. His friend, Al, owns the diner where the portal is located and teaches him a few tricks about going back and forth in time. Al talks Jake into going back in time to save John F. Kennedy from assassination. Can civilization handle the wrinkles, changes, and broken strings created by visiting and changing the past?
