Books of the Week: American Literature Courses for DHS (updated)
Books of the Week American Literature Courses for DHS (updated)
In December I wrote about the American Literature courses at DHS. My source was a high school junior that had taken the course first semester of this school year. If you’ll remember, I wasn’t very high on the choices and only found one that got me excited enough to read it. (Stay tuned for a review because I’m in the midst of it.) Meanwhile, Burger Boy and I were happy about his American Literature teacher assignment. He had Mr. Williams for Writer’s Workshop his sophomore year and really enjoyed his class. I first met Mr. Williams randomly while walking to our cars from a DHS football game and thought he and his son were both charming. Well….I won’t ramble on and on but let me just say that I am THRILLED to report that Mr. Nathan Williams has American Literature reading requirements for Burger Boy that I am very pleased about! The list is longer, much to Troy’s chagrin, and much more robust. I enthusiastically logged in to Amazon and ordered all of the required reading and Troy’s choice immediately. Whoa…I’ve got my reading cut out for me. Wait…this is Troy’s class, not mine. Oh well, I’m going to read them anyway!! Some from the list of books in the “choose one” selection are a little bit controversial for my taste but the required reading gets an A from this book worm!
Required Reading
The Way to Rainy Mountain
by N. Scott Momaday by University of New Mexico Press
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (I own a 1948 edition. Probably won’t read it again anytime soon. I had forgotten that this book has been banned before and is known for being controversial.~Audra)
Grapes of Wrath such a great book!
