Today my friend Beth and I start an exercise program with our new personal trainer. In exchange for a few month’s of training I agreed to write about my experience. Just so you’ll know… I. DON’T. EXERCISE. Not unless you call walking George exercise. I also love to cook and try new food. However, as I’m nearing 50 my body is telling me that it will feel better and last longer if I make some healthy adjustments to my lifestyle. I’ll keep you posted, if I don’t die today at the gym. Meanwhile following are the notes about my first meeting with Jose Trevino at UFC Gym. (Feel free to comment or ask questions by using the comments forum on this post.)
Audra’s Fitness Blog: Entry Date- 1/7/16
I still like Jose after the meeting even though he measured me and gave me my body fat index. There’s a lot of me to work with so we should be able to have some significant results to report if I stick with this like I plan to!
At first we sat down and he filled out a basic form asking me questions about my health history, medications, injuries, blood pressure, goals etc.
He suggested I download and start using the “My Fitness Pal” app, so I downloaded it and have enjoyed using it. He said he plans to help Beth and me with how many calories and how much protein we need each day to meet our goals etc. Next week he will help us fill in some stuff on the app to help us with our specific plans. I LOVE this idea and told him I’m much more likely to track food if I have an app for it. He also wants me to tell my Doctors that I’m starting to work out and find out if they have any concerns or restrictions for me since I’m getting so old and have such stupid diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis and Celiac Disease). (I later asked and both Docs said they are thrilled for me to be exercising more!)
Then he weighed me. That was fun.
Then he made me take off my shoes and he watched me do squats (no weights, just squats). He was checking my balance and form to see areas where my muscles were tight. (Or something…I’m really not sure) but he walked around me while I did squats and wrote stuff down. I had asked him about shoes to buy…because I’ve never bought sneakers with a purpose. So he gave me some ideas but wouldn’t give me suggestions until he saw me do the squats. Kinda funny. He later sent me some shoe recs via email. (I later went to Fleet Feet in Sandy Springs and bought myself some awesome New Balance shoes that my athletic sons approve of!)
Then Jose gave me this thing that looked like an Xbox controller and told me to hold it out in front of me. He proceeded to inform me of this awful body fat number that we are now trying to improve. Strange that the Xbox thing could tell us this but I trust him for some reason.
Then he measured my neck, arm, bust, waist, hips, thighs and calves. Again…that was fun. NOT. Regardless I still like Jose for some reason…but it is early in this process.
Before leaving I asked Jose where he is from (pale, tall, Caucasian guy with name like Jose Trevino…had to ask). Apparently he was born in Jalisco, Mexico. Dad is Mexican. Mom is French. He speaks fluent Spanish and says he gets a kick out of bursting into fluent Spanish when around Hispanics that least expect a tall pale white boy to understand them!
I left UFC and went to Wal-Mart to buy 2 pair of ugly tight workout pants and 2 ugly workout shirts because I really don’t have anything to wear for this adventure! Interestingly enough, these ugly clothes are very comfortable.
This is great, Audra! Bravo on your new venture and for taking us with you! I have been using My Fitness Pal ap for several months and LOVE it! You’re going to be amazed at how many calories some things are! I try to input the food BEFORE I eat it so I can make some different choices if need be. I’ll be following your progress! 🙂
You made me chuckle from beginning to end! I look forward to reading about your progress!!!
Audra,
Congrats on your fitness mission. Exercise is definitely a significant part of getting ‘in shape’ and the other part is make sure you are eating properly. The “My Fitness Pal” app is a great way to track what you are eating.
The magic comes when you have a healthy exercise, nutrition, and sleep regime. The combination of the three will lead to results.

Good for you!! You’re going to feel so good….eventually! Keep up the good work and thanks for the hilarious comments that we can all relate to.
We love UFC and Jose! Everyone at UFC is awesome. I know that Jose will get you into great shape and you will enjoy the workouts. The key is to stick with it, especially at the beginning when it is most difficult! (Rumor has it that he responds well to “meow”, so don’t be afraid to make any cat references if he is giving you a hard time!) Good luck and keep up the good work!
