The intersection at Tilly Mill Road and North Peachtree Road will be the first intersection improvement to be designed and constructed as a result of the city’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan. It was determined to be a high priority based on community input and the existing poor level of service.
This past week, work crews performed initial limits of construction preparation activities and tree removal. The tree removal process has been completed and work crews will continue clearing the project right-of-ways and general preparation activities to relocate existing utilities within the construction area. The city has a “no net loss of trees” policy and will replace trees which were removed within the project right of way during the construction phase of the project.
As with many construction projects, work is ultimately dependent upon the weather. Over the next several weeks work will primarily concentrate on utility relocation. Crews will also be conducting geotechnical engineering work for the future stormwater detention pond on the southeastern side of the North Peachtree Road intersection.
The city does not anticipate the need for any full-time lane closures during this stage of construction, however drivers can expect temporary delays and the potential for periodic closure of one lane as flag crews help direct traffic around ongoing work. Traffic flows in the area will be monitored to properly address any potential delays during this time period.
This intersection and surrounding area manages traffic from five arterial and collector roads of Dunwoody, providing access to and from neighborhoods and destinations such as Georgia Perimeter College and several area public schools. Design elements such as new sidewalks and bike lanes, additional turn lanes, and pedestrian refuge islands will all improve the safety and flow within the related intersections.
