November is the month I chose to host my  neighborhood book club.   On Wednesday night, 24 of the most lovely and wonderful Meadowlake Book Worms converged on my home to discuss this compelling, twisty page-turner.   We started our lively conversation with a viewing of the book trailer (This is the first time any of us even knew that book trailers existed but it was a good way to segue into the book discussion.)   Here’s the trailer for you to see:

Then I asked the girls to rate the book on a scale of 1-5 with five being the best and our average was a very solid 4.125!   I also asked the girls to write a one word or one sentence description of the book and here are some of their comments:

  • “You wont’ want to put it down!” (MKM)
  • “Awesome”  (CT)
  • “Twisty” (MM)
  • “Thought Provoking”  (SHK)
  • “Intriguing”  (HL)
  • “Unexpected”  (MF)
  • “Great Quick Read” (SS)
  • “Riveting”  (AM)
  • “Suspenseful” (IL)
  • “Engrossing” (SR)

I thoroughly enjoyed it.   It is Kubica’s first novel and I predict she will soon be a household name.  I have no doubt that Hollywood will pick up this book for a movie before too long and we’ll all be lining up at the theaters to see it.  It’s all the words my friends used to describe it and more.

The basic premise is about the kidnapping of a young teacher in her twenties in Chicago.  The story is told back and forth from a before and after perspective.  I could not put it down and didn’t really know exactly what was going on until the very last page.   Once I finished I contemplated starting at the beginning to re-read after finding out the big twist.   My perspective would be entirely different after knowing the truth.

Leave a comment if you’d like to win one of my two well-read and worn copies!   I’ll choose a winner next week!

  1. I love to find a new author and I love suspense books. This dawg fan forgives you for the Auburn will beat the Dawgs comment.

  2. No need for a copy of the book since I already read it! Mary was my freshman year college corridor roommate. She is a fantastic person on top of being a terrific author! Loved seeing a dream come to life for her. 🙂

  3. We started a book club in our neighborhood and I have become obsessed with reading all genres of books. I would love to read this one too!
