A report from Dunwoody City Councilman, Terry Nall
The long-time litigation between City of Dunwoody and DeKalb County over $7 million remaining unspent by the county in Dunwoody at Brook Run Park is settled for $4 million. The city’s $7 million claim dated back to a pre-city parks bond referendum, which Dunwoody residents continue to pay into today. The outcome of the prolonged litigation could have been $0 or $7 million, but the court ruling would have been subject to appeal after appeal. Settling for $4 million means Dunwoody is able to move forward with parks capital projects, albeit with a lesser amount. This $4 million is restricted to park projects.
I feel a priority for the next parks capital budget should be to finish out the multi-purpose fields for lacrosse and other field sports in the back area of Brook Run Park. This is a recreation need that is unmet in Dunwoody.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new park at Pernoshal Court and N. Shallowford Road is scheduled for this Thursday, June 4 at 12:00 pm. The public is invited to attend. Based on extensive public input, this park will include full and half-court basketball courts, pickle ball, multi-purpose field, multi-purpose trail extension into Brook Run Park, terraced seating, pavilion, and restrooms. The park is located across Pernoshal Court from another city-owned parcel (currently rented to Emory Healthcare) that may be considered for a future city hall site.
