Book of the Week: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

The Nightingale

by Kristin Hannah

This is very simply the best book I have read in at least a year.  After reading 11 books so far in 2015, this one is sitting all by itself waaaay up on top of my faves for 2015.   If you don’t understand what people mean when they describe books as “beautifully written”, then read this book for an example.  I didn’t want to skip a single word. The Nightingale could possibly be the first book I will ever read twice.
I’ve ready plenty of World War II books but am never immune to the despair of this time.  The two French sisters in this book are in a word:  marvelous.  The book is narrated by one of the sisters in the present, though you really don’t know until the very end which sister it is.   Everything about this book is extraordinary including the ending.
I love this quote from the book:
“In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are.”

  1. Yay! so glad you liked it! So I have a little credibility in book suggestions now?!
I loved it too but I already told you that at lunch!

  2. I agree — the best book ever! The descriptions of the two women, the men they encountered, their surroundings — all just beautifully written. I found most interesting the differences between the sisters and they “dovetailed” as their desperation grew. This book is an outstanding star among other WWII books that are best-sellers this year.

  3. I have noyt read this one, but will now. I have read her others and they are all fabulous. I love firefly lane, and the sequel. So many of her books are wonderful.

  4. Thank you for this recommendation. I agree with everything you said! I was sobbing when I finished this book!! I did not want it to end. It was so beautifully written. The last book that made me feel this way was The Help.
