Gov. Deal signs measure aimed at failing schools

Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation Tuesday that sets the stage for a statewide referendum on his plan to turn around failing schools in Georgia.

Under a proposed constitutional amendment that will appear on the ballot in November of next year, the state could step in and start running schools that score below 60 on the Georgia Department of Education’s College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) for three consecutive years.
